What changes when you convert GIF to JPG
- JPG compression is lossy. You choose the quality (90 by default): lower values make smaller files but can blur fine detail and leave artifacts around text and sharp edges.
- JPG has no transparency: transparent areas of the GIF are filled with white, and semi-transparent edges are blended onto white.
- The JPG is a still image: an animated GIF is converted from its first frame only.
GIF and JPG compared
GIF
An older format still used everywhere for short looping animations.

- Yes: frames with their own timing, usually looping.
- Support
- Opens almost everywhere, including email clients and chat apps.
- Typical uses
- Short animations, reactions, simple graphics with few colors.
JPG
The most widely used photo format; .jpg and .jpeg are two extensions of the same JPEG format.
- Compression

- Opens in virtually every browser, operating system, image editor and app.
- Typical uses
- Photos, camera images, web pages, email attachments.

Frequently asked questions
Answers about converting GIF images to JPG with this free tool.
Will the JPG have better colors than the GIF?
No. The GIF already limits the image to 256 colors, and converting cannot restore the colors that were removed. JPG can hold millions of colors, so later edits are no longer limited to a palette.
GIF to JPG or GIF to PNG?
PNG keeps the exact colors and the transparency of the GIF without compression, ideal for graphics and text. JPG suits photographic GIFs and forms that only accept JPG.
What happens to transparent areas when I convert GIF to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so the converter fills transparent areas with white, the color most viewers show behind them. Semi-transparent pixels, such as soft shadows, are blended onto white. To keep transparency, choose a format that stores it, such as PNG or WebP.
What happens if my GIF is animated?
The JPG is a still image, so the converter keeps the first frame of the animation. To keep the animation, convert the GIF to WebP instead.
Which quality setting should I choose for JPG?
The quality slider goes from 0 to 100 and starts at 90, a good balance for most images. Lower it for smaller files; raise it if you see blur or blocky artifacts around text. You can convert again with another value and compare the file sizes shown with the result.
Is the GIF to JPG converter free?
Yes, it is free and needs no account. It converts one image at a time, up to 10 MB and 25 megapixels, and adds no watermark. Images are processed for the conversion and are not stored permanently.
