Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about DPI, print size and how to change them.
What does changing the DPI of an image do?
DPI (dots per inch) tells printers and layout software how many pixels to print per inch. Changing it only changes the print size stored in the file: the image keeps the same pixels and looks the same on screen.
How do I change an image to 300 DPI?
Upload the image, click 300 or type any whole value from 1 to 5,000, check the print size in centimeters and inches, then download the file. For example, a 3000 × 2400 px image prints at 25.4 × 20.3 cm (10 × 8 in) at 300 DPI.
Will a 300 DPI converter make my image sharper?
No. Changing the DPI adds no pixels and no detail. If the print size at 300 DPI is too small for you, the image needs more pixels, so start from a larger original: the DPI setting alone cannot add them.
Is the image re-encoded?
JPEG and PNG files are not: they are edited in your browser and are not uploaded. Only the density fields change (JFIF, EXIF and Photoshop resolution in a JPEG, pHYs and EXIF in a PNG), so the pixels stay identical.
What about TIFF, WebP, AVIF and GIF files?
They are sent to our server, which returns them to your browser without saving them. TIFF keeps its format and is re-encoded without loss. WebP, AVIF and GIF have no DPI field that print software reads, so they are converted to PNG, without loss, or to JPEG, with the DPI set.
How can I check the DPI of an image?
Upload it: the tool reads the DPI stored in a JPEG or PNG file and shows the print size it gives. After the change, it reads the DPI back from the new file. When a file stores no DPI, each program uses its own default value.
