What changes when you convert AVIF to JPG
- Both formats are usually lossy, so the image is decoded and compressed again at the quality you choose (90 by default). Each lossy save can lose a little detail; at a high setting the difference is usually hard to see.
- JPG has no transparency: transparent areas of the AVIF are filled with white, and semi-transparent edges are blended onto white.
AVIF and JPG compared
AVIF
A recent image format based on the AV1 video codec, built for very small files.
- Compression
- Lossy or lossless; often smaller than WebP at comparable quality.

- Typical uses
- Images on modern websites that want the smallest files.
JPG
The most widely used photo format; .jpg and .jpeg are two extensions of the same JPEG format.
- Compression
- Lossy: it discards detail the eye notices least, and a quality setting trades file size against artifacts.

- None: every pixel is opaque.
- Animation
- None.
- Support
- Opens in virtually every browser, operating system, image editor and app.
- Typical uses
- Photos, camera images, web pages, email attachments.

Frequently asked questions
Answers about converting AVIF images to JPG with this free tool.
Why can’t I open my AVIF file?
AVIF is a recent format based on the AV1 video codec. Current browsers display it, but older operating systems, many photo editors, office apps and upload forms do not support it yet. Converting to JPG makes the image usable in all of them.
Why is the JPG larger than the AVIF?
AVIF compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the same image at a similar visual quality takes more space as a JPG. Lowering the quality setting reduces the size, at the cost of more visible artifacts.
What happens to transparent areas when I convert AVIF to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so the converter fills transparent areas with white, the color most viewers show behind them. Semi-transparent pixels, such as soft shadows, are blended onto white. To keep transparency, choose a format that stores it, such as PNG or WebP.
Which quality setting should I choose for JPG?
The quality slider goes from 0 to 100 and starts at 90, a good balance for most images. Lower it for smaller files; raise it if you see blur or blocky artifacts around text. You can convert again with another value and compare the file sizes shown with the result.
Is the AVIF to JPG converter free?
Yes, it is free and needs no account. It converts one image at a time, up to 10 MB and 25 megapixels, and adds no watermark. Images are processed for the conversion and are not stored permanently.
