Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about viewing and removing the metadata of a photo.
How do I remove metadata from a photo?
Upload the photo or paste it with Ctrl+V. The tool first shows what its metadata reveals: camera, date taken, GPS location, software and orientation. Click Remove metadata, check that the result is clean, then download it.
What metadata does the tool remove?
EXIF data (camera, settings, dates, GPS coordinates and the embedded thumbnail), XMP, IPTC, comments, PNG text, other application data and any data stored after the image, such as the extra depth or HDR images some phones attach. In JPEG, PNG and WebP files, the color profile is kept so colors look the same.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
JPEG, PNG and WebP files are processed in your browser and never sent to our server. AVIF, TIFF and GIF files are sent to our server, re-encoded without metadata in memory for this request and returned to your browser; the tool does not save them. The page shows which case applies before you click.
Does removing EXIF data reduce quality?
Not for JPEG, PNG and WebP files: the metadata blocks are cut out of the file and the image data is copied unchanged, so the pixels are identical. AVIF, TIFF and GIF files are re-encoded (AVIF at quality 90, TIFF with lossless LZW compression), which can change pixels slightly, and their colors are converted to sRGB.
Will my photo still display the right way up?
Yes. A photo taken with the phone turned often relies on its EXIF orientation tag to display upright. By default, the tool keeps only that tag, which reveals nothing about you. For a JPEG, you can instead rotate the pixels and remove every tag, which re-encodes the photo at quality 92 in your browser. AVIF, TIFF and GIF files are rotated on our server.
How can I view the EXIF data and GPS location of a photo?
Upload the photo: before anything is removed, the tool lists the camera or phone model, lens, date taken, GPS coordinates, software, orientation, author and copyright it finds, and counts the other fields. A photo with GPS coordinates is flagged, because anyone who gets the file can see where it was taken.
