Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG keeps the image exactly as it is now, but it cannot restore detail that JPG compression already removed. What you gain is that later edits and saves no longer lose quality.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque with the same background. Converting the format does not remove a background; that takes a separate editing step.
Why is my PNG so much larger than the JPG?
JPG compresses photos by discarding detail, while PNG keeps every pixel. A photo therefore usually takes noticeably more space as a PNG. To share photos, keeping the JPG is usually better.
