What changes when you convert JPG to WebP
- Both formats are usually lossy, so the image is decoded and compressed again at the quality you choose (90 by default). Each lossy save can lose a little detail; at a high setting the difference is usually hard to see.
- JPG has no transparency, so the WebP is fully opaque: converting does not remove the background.
JPG and WebP compared
JPG
The most widely used photo format; .jpg and .jpeg are two extensions of the same JPEG format.
- Compression
- Lossy: it discards detail the eye notices least, and a quality setting trades file size against artifacts.
- Transparency
- None: every pixel is opaque.
- Animation
- None.
- Support
- Opens in virtually every browser, operating system, image editor and app.
- Typical uses
- Photos, camera images, web pages, email attachments.
WebP
A web format developed by Google, generally smaller than JPG or PNG at comparable quality.
- Compression
- Lossy or lossless; images served by websites are usually lossy.
- Transparency
- Full alpha channel.
- Animation
- Yes: animated WebP replaces GIF on many websites.
- Support
- Current versions of all major browsers; some older programs, print services and upload forms still reject it.
- Typical uses
- Images on websites and online stores, where smaller files load faster.

Frequently asked questions
Answers about converting JPG images to WebP with this free tool.
How much smaller will the WebP be?
It depends on the photo and on the quality you choose, so the converter shows the new file size with the result. Since the JPG is already compressed, a lower quality saves more space but adds a second round of artifacts.
Should I keep my JPG files?
Yes, keep the originals. Converting JPG to WebP compresses an already compressed image, so converting back later would lose a little more detail. Some email clients and older apps also do not display WebP.
Which quality setting should I choose for WebP?
The quality slider goes from 0 to 100 and starts at 90, a good balance for most images. Lower it for smaller files; raise it if you see blur or blocky artifacts around text. You can convert again with another value and compare the file sizes shown with the result.
Is the JPG to WebP converter free?
Yes, it is free and needs no account. It converts one image at a time, up to 10 MB and 25 megapixels, and adds no watermark. Images are processed for the conversion and are not stored permanently.
